The only interview with Nicolas Darvas in the World

Hi Nic. Its a pleasure to meet you in person. Thank you for agreeing to do this interview. Welcome and please do feel comfortable.

Nic: Thanks for having me and its always my pleasure to discuss stocks and the stock market.

Nic would you mind if we get right down to talking about the stock markets? I cant wait to pick your brains on this subject. In fact, Ive been waiting for many years to do this.

NIC: Sure..thats what I am here for.

OK. After your amazing success in the late 1950s and after publishing How I Made $2 Million In The Stock Market how did life change for you?

NIC: It was an amazing period in my life. I went from $25,000 which was everything I had at the time to a multi-millionaire in quite short length of time. But I was amazed at the publicity I stirred up in Time Magazine in 1959. I never knew there would be such a big interest in a solo stock trader. Then the success of my book was another major accomplishment in my life. It sold over 400,000 copies in the first year you know. Sure I was much richer than I dreamed I ever would be by 1960 but my life never changed. I carried on dancing and investing. I was able to buy more properties throughout the world with my financial success. For that I was grateful. As a person it never changed me one bit.

Glad to hear it Nic. I got that impression. You seem a very sincere down to earth guy. Do you think this attitude helped you succeed in the stock market?

NIC: Maybe its not for me to say. I never got too down about losses. It never bothered me if I was out of the market for months at a time. And because my system dictated when I got out of a winning stock I never got anxious or excited about hose winners. Looking back, I suppose it was quite remarkable how I could go from $25,000 to over $2 Million with such calmness. Thats me. After the massive success in the late 1950s I took a portion of my profits out of the stock market and invested in property. I felt there would be no point of great success if I didnt see something tangible for it. After that I felt like I was merely participating in a game. If I followed the rules I won money. When I broke them I lost. My challenge was following the rules.

So you admit to still making mistakes in the stock market?

NIC: Of course I do. Its very hard not to try and cut corners even when its your own ultra money making method. Occasionally I get swayed. Break the rules. Lose money. But it isnt very often theses days.

Whats the biggest question you always get asked when traders find out you are Nicolas Darvas?

Thats easy. Can I have your autograph and can you borrow me some money.

Ha,ha. Really?

Nic: No. Just kidding you. Hm.. the two most asked question I get? Lets think. They would probably be..

Camp Stove Guide

Performance/ Fuel Types

Performance will vary depending on the type of fuel used. Propane camp stoves performance is measured in BTU’s (British Thermal Unit). Put, simply for a propane stove the higher the BTU’s in the 1000’s the better output (heat).

Propane is probably the most widely used fuel for a stove. The positive aspect of a gas stove is the lack of maintenance needed and ease of use. Although, most propane stoves will cost more to refill. Unlike the liquid fuel camping stoves.

Liquid fuel stoves run on white gas (Coleman fuel) available at various camping stores. However, travelling out of the country may prove more difficult to find white gas. This is the place where multi-fuel stoves make there move to become the best option. Other liquid fuels used run on Kerosene, alcohol, and unleaded gasoline (petrol).

Using liquid fuel stoves will require priming, preparing and maintenance that proves easy enough with the many available instruction guides to use. In short, a fuel like kerosene will create much unwanted filthy soot. Liquid fuel has many advantages including, low costs and performance in low temperatures.

Awareness of what stoves and fuels perform best in various weather condition’s will support choosing the best stove.

Camp stoves come in various shapes, sizes, weight, fuel types and performance. Knowledge is king when choosing various camping gear needed. This applies to finding the best camp stove.

Quality Stoves

There is some very good choices for a quality stove on the market today. Spending money on a good brand I believe is key. Two of my favourite stoves are MSR and Coleman. I rate the Coleman for car camping and without a doubt and MSR for camping solo, hiking and backpacking.

As the old saying goes buy cheap , pay twice.I have found it has paid and become an investment by spending a little extra. I have been down the cheap route and ended up buying again.

Family Camping

A stove with two burners will be the best option to allow enough room to cook a couple of pots for a meal. They may already have a wind shield fitted or you may have to provide your own. Setting up a stable stove is important before cooking. Especially around children.

Stove Safety

When refilling a camping stove with your chosen fuel allow it to cool down to prevent burns. With solid fuel camping stoves allow spilt fuel to evaporate before igniting. Using a funnel for fuel will help prevent spillages.

Before leaving home check your stove over and give it a service as you would your car. This is advisable for all camping gear if it has been stored away for the winter season or a long period of time. It will only take about 10 minutes to check hoses and valves for cracks or leaks .

Most safety is common sense although it is the common sense things that get many in to big trouble. Your stove should come with instructions to use and maintain the stove correctly. I would always have a trial at home. This helps with becoming familiar with the functions of the stove and to also check everything is in working order. I also enjoy checking out the new stuff I have bought.

Family camping, camping alone , backpacking and hiking has been my passion for a fair few years.
